I was up at 7am this (yesterday) morning, then caught a very rare sight, a relatively empty rush-hour train to London, and relatively empty tube to Westminster - loads of spare seats for once! Then it was a quick walk over to County Hall for the Conservatives General Election launch. I got there quite early, and as the event was outdoors we were put into a holding room until the time came for David Cameron’s speech, it was great to catch up with a number of Parliamentary Candidates and friends. It soon became very clear by the news helicopters and the numerous phones going off that it had finally happened, something we’ve been waiting for since June 2007, Gordon Brown finally summed up the courage to go to The Queen and call the election. As soon as Brown was on his way back to the palace we went outside and welcomed David and Samantha before David gave a speech to us and the awaiting media. Of course, knowing my knack of inadvertently appearing on TV, I stood directly behind David - luckily this time I was directly behind him so didn’t get too much coverage (although my Dad did text me during the speech - “You are right behind him” - good to have some reassurance about where I am!)

After the speech it was a case of saying goodbye and good luck to friends and candidates, as I’m unlikely to see most of them before the General Election is over, and then an uneventful trip back to Reading (why do trains always run on time when I’m not on my way to work!). I then hit the Campaign trail in Reading East with Rob Wilson’s team, spreading our message:

Acting now on debt to get the economy moving

Getting Britain working by boosting enterprise

Making Britain the most family-friendly country in Europe

Backing the NHS

Raising standards in schools

Changing politics

And of course highlighting the clean campaign message that Rob Wilson and Green candidate Rob White have signed up to.

Of course there is much more to come, including all the main parties announcing election manifestos in the coming weeks, it’s sure to be a lively campaign…

Unusually for politicians there are no scripts and no planted questions or planted audience members, and David Cameron usually makes the point that he takes the questions one at a time, rather than the usual politician trick of taking three at a time and not answering a difficult one.

The meetings are open to anyone of any political persuasion, although seats will obviously be constrained to the size of the venue, for information on booking visit the Cameron Direct page on the Reading West Conservatives website. If you are unable to attend, or want to watch previous ones they are available here.

And just to prove there are no planted questions, take a look at this one:

It includes live and archived feeds from Parliament, the Lords, Select Committees, European Parliament and many more, as well as the ability to look up your local MP and MEP.

I had a demonstration of the site at Conservative Spring Forum earlier this year and was very impressed. At first glance it looks like just a set of video feeds amalgamating what is going on in various political locations. However the power is in it’s voice-to-text search engine, enabling you to search for what was spoken rather than having to sit through hours of video to find the bit you want.

After yesterdays post on dodgy bar charts, it’s time to look into one of the articles of the lovely Lib Dem leaflet.

The most ridiculous is this one:

Shocking, what nasty Tories. One slight problem the vast majority of the article is factually incorrect. Extremely worrying since there have been Lib Dem Councillors at every meeting involving this.

Lets look into two of the claims:

“… Reading Conservatives withdrew their support from a community campaign and instead backed Labour plans to hand the site over to a tall hotel development by the Thames” - False. Labour recommended to Cabinet the hotel option, however this decision was “called in” by Conservatives forcing Labour to rethink it’s plans. (See this article in the Reading Post for more details)

“Labour have backed the hotel plans throughout”. No they haven’t - thanks to the Conservative call in Labour did a u-turn at a later Cabinet meeting and now back the community option. (See this article in the Reading Post for more details).
